The short version
- CDC is investigating an outbreak of E. coli and Salmonella linked to alfalfa sprouts. As of its October 1, 2026 update, 76 people in 16 states have been sick, 6 have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported.
- FDA traced the illnesses to a single lot of alfalfa seed: lot SAL2-24JB.
- The seed supplier recalled that lot. So did companies that used it, including Todd's Seeds, which sold sprouting seeds for home sprouting nationwide on Amazon and on its own website.
- The recalled Todd's Seeds bags carry a "Use By" date of 12/31/2029. If you sprout at home, they may still be in your pantry.
- FDA rated these recalls Class I, its highest-risk recall class.
Check your bag first
If you bought Todd's Seeds sprouting seeds, find the "Lot No:" on the bag's description label. The recalled lots are:
| Product | Lot No. | Sizes |
|---|---|---|
| Alfalfa Sprouting Seeds | SAL2-24JB (1/4, 1/2 and 1 lb.); TS-1462-2.5-4 (2.5 lb.); TS-1462-5-3 (5 lb.) | 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2.5 and 5 lb. |
| Broccoli & Friends Sprouting Seed Mix (Broccoli, Alfalfa, Radish, Clover) | TS-245-MIX-13 | 1 oz. sample packets; 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2.5 and 5 lb. |
| Sprouting Seed Mix (Broccoli, Radish, Alfalfa) | TS-111-MIX-13 | 1/4, 1/2, 1 and 5 lb. |
| Salad Sprouting Mixture (Broccoli, Mustard, Alfalfa and Cabbage) | TS-633-2 | 1/4, 1/2 and 1 lb. |
| Alfalfa & Mung Bundle (1 lb. each) | TS-229-4-MK | 1 lb. bags |
| Variety Pack of Sprouting Seeds (Broccoli, Alfalfa, Radish, Mung & Clover) | TS-VARSPRT-1 | 2 oz. bags |
Every recalled bag lists "Use By: 12/31/2029." FDA's enforcement report lists 37,481 retail units in total.
Not recalled, according to Todd's Seeds: the same mixes without "-13" at the end of the lot number (TS-245-MIX, TS-111-MIX), and alfalfa lots SAL2-23JD and SAL2-25JC, plus a lot Todd's Seeds writes as "SAL-25JF."
No lot number, or you can't read it? Todd's Seeds says: "Do not use the seed until we confirm." The company can look it up from your order.
What to do if you have a recalled bag
Todd's Seeds asks customers to:
- Not sprout or eat the seed, and throw away any sprouts grown from it.
- Seal the package in a bag and put it in the household trash. Do not mail it back.
- Clean jars, lids, trays, screens and counters that touched the seed with hot soapy water, then sanitize them, and wash your hands.
For a refund or replacement, email todd@toddsseeds.com (Todd's Seeds says email is faster than the phone) or call (248) 206-3200. Include the lot number (or say you can't find it), where you bought it, and your order number if you have it. Amazon buyers should contact Todd's Seeds directly, not Amazon.
CDC's advice: "CDC advises people and businesses not eat, sell, or serve affected alfalfa sprouts or sprouting seeds." If you have recalled sprouts at home, CDC says to "throw them out or return them to where you purchased them."
What happened
CDC's October 1, 2026 update reports 76 people sick in 16 states:
- 64 with E. coli only (strains O26:H11, O103:H25 and O168:H8)
- 9 with Salmonella Agona only
- 3 with both
Six of 68 people with information were hospitalized. No deaths were reported. Illnesses started between May 31 and September 7, 2026.
Of 50 people interviewed, 40 reported eating sprouts, and 35 of those specifically reported alfalfa sprouts. In Minnesota and Wisconsin, tracing illnesses back from restaurants pointed to alfalfa sprouts distributed by Everything Sprouts.
According to CDC, FDA then traced the illnesses to a single lot of alfalfa seed from a common seed supplier: lot SAL2-24JB, which CDC says "may be contaminated with multiple pathogens."
The seed supplier's recall
International Sprout Holdings, of Cookeville, Tennessee, recalled 50 lb. bags of alfalfa seed, lot SAL2-24JB, starting August 23, 2026. FDA's enforcement report lists 43,799 lbs., sold to wholesale customers in 16 states (CA, FL, HI, IL, MA, MN, MO, MT, NY, OH, OR, PA, TN, SC, TX and UT), Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, Tahiti and Venezuela.
Todd's Seeds, also of Cookeville, says its supplier, International Specialty Supply (International Sprout Holdings, Inc.), recalled the lot. Todd's Seeds started its recall on September 11, 2026. It says seed from this lot, along with other lots that are not affected, was packed between January 5 and May 22, 2026, and that website orders that may contain it shipped between January 10 and May 12, 2026. A date in that window does not mean a bag is recalled. The lot number decides.
Sprouts recalled in stores
Everything Sprouts (Minnesota and Wisconsin)
Everything Sprouts, of Minneapolis, recalled four sprout products sold in Minnesota and Wisconsin, because they "may be contaminated with STEC E. coli and/or Salmonella."

The Alfalfa Sprouts were also sold in trays of 6 (UPC 8 60014-52312 0) and 12 (UPC 8 60014-52311 3).
A separate sprouts outbreak: Evergreen Fresh Sprouts broccoli sprouts
This one is not part of the alfalfa outbreak. FDA links Evergreen's broccoli sprouts to a separate Salmonella outbreak, which it is investigating apart from the alfalfa sprouts outbreak.
Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, of Moyie Springs, Idaho, recalled 4 oz. bags of Broccoli Sprouts (UPC 8 38796 00105 1) distributed in Washington, for Salmonella. The use-by dates were between 9/07 and 9/16/2026.
Symptoms to watch for
Todd's Seeds' notice says E. coli symptoms typically start three to four days after exposure and can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea that is often bloody, and vomiting. It says children under five, adults over 65 and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a potentially life-threatening kidney condition.
If you ate sprouts from a recalled lot and feel unwell, contact your doctor and mention possible E. coli exposure from raw sprouts.
