What happened in the Starfish Seafood recalls

Both Starfish Seafood products are cold smoked fish from Latvia, in 8 oz packs. The Seafood Trio holds cold smoked salmon, halibut and trout. The Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced is stored frozen.

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets identified the possible contamination in both products. For the smoked salmon, the notice says it was found through product sampling. Neither notice gives a test date.

Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. is a wholesale distributor, and it says it did not make the fish. "Starfish Seafood" is the brand.

Both company notices are dated October 9, 2026. FDA posted the Seafood Trio recall on October 9. The smoked salmon recall went up on October 16, 2026.

For both products, the company told its customers to stop selling the fish. It also asked them to find remaining stock and tell their own customers.

Listeria: what to know

The notices say Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. The notices name young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy people may have short-term symptoms. The notices list high fever, severe headache, stiffness and nausea. Abdominal pain and diarrhea are on the list too.

CDC says people who aren't pregnant typically have fever and flu-like symptoms. Those include muscle aches and fatigue. CDC lists headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and seizures too. CDC says symptoms of invasive illness usually start within 2 weeks of eating the food.

Symptoms in pregnant women are usually mild, and some have none. But CDC says infection during pregnancy usually leads to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn.

CDC says Listeria is most likely to harm four groups. They are pregnant women, newborns, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

Say you ate the recalled fish. Now you have a fever with fatigue or muscle aches. CDC says to contact a healthcare provider and name the food.

Say you ate it and feel well. CDC says most experts believe you don't need tests or treatment. You can ask a provider if you have questions.

Also recalled for Listeria: guanciale, Member's Mark freeze-dried fruit and Gelatelli gelato.
