Listeria: what to know

Listeriosis is the infection Listeria monocytogenes causes. FSIS calls it a serious infection.

It mainly affects three groups. They are older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Less often, people outside the three groups get it too.

FSIS lists these symptoms: fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion and loss of balance. Convulsions, which are seizures, are on the list too. Sometimes diarrhea or other stomach symptoms come first.

In pregnant women, listeriosis can cause miscarriage, stillbirth or premature delivery. It can also cause a life-threatening infection of the newborn. For older adults and people with weakened immune systems, it can be serious, sometimes fatal. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics.

Say you're in one of the higher-risk groups. You ate the recalled guanciale, and flu-like symptoms show up within two months. FSIS says to seek medical care and tell your provider about the food.

Also recalled for Listeria: Member's Mark freeze-dried fruit, Gelatelli gelato and bettergoods lemon alfredo fettuccine.
