The short version

  • From June to August 2026, 488 people in 34 states got sick with Salmonella Javiana. CDC and FDA linked the outbreak to fresh jalapeño peppers from Sinaloa, Mexico, distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors.
  • Oklahoma was one of the 34 states with cases.
  • Several companies recalled grocery products made with those jalapeños: pico de gallo, salsa, guacamole, dips, a burrito, a sandwich, a salad, and a salad dressing. They were sold at stores including Walmart, Kroger, Target, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, HEB, Hannaford and Stop & Shop.
  • FDA rated these recalls Class I, its highest-risk recall class.
  • CDC declared the outbreak over on October 2, 2026.
  • Most recalled products with printed dates had "best if used by" dates in August 2026. One did not: Salata Jalapeño Avocado Dressing, sold at HEB in Texas, has best-by dates in November 2026. If you have it, check the date.

What happened in the 2026 jalapeño Salmonella outbreak

CDC's final update, posted October 2, 2026, reports 488 people sick in 34 states. 65 people were hospitalized, and no deaths were reported. People got sick between June 16 and August 26, 2026.

Tracing the jalapeños back pointed to Sinaloa, Mexico. FDA says "a common grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, that supplies to Coast Citrus Distributors, was identified as the likely source." FDA also says it "was unable to determine a route or source of contamination for this outbreak."

Most people who got sick ate out. Of 308 people CDC interviewed, 281 (91%) reported eating at a Mexican-style restaurant, including Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA. CDC's August 5 update said the peppers went mainly to restaurants and wholesalers, and that both chains had stopped serving the affected peppers.

Some of the jalapeños also went into foods sold in grocery stores. Those are the recalls below.

What "Class I" means

FDA sorts recalls into three classes. Class I is FDA's highest-risk recall class. FDA defines it as "a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."

FDA classified the Taylor Fresh Foods and NatureBest recalls as Class I in mid-September 2026, and the Salata dressing recall on September 29, 2026.

What to do if you have a recalled jalapeño product

FDA says: "Consumers should check their homes and discard recalled products or return them to the place of purchase for a refund." FDA also notes that some recalled products have longer shelf lives, like the Salata dressing above.

Taylor Fresh Foods says anyone with a recalled product "should discard it immediately and not consume it."

Salmonella symptoms to watch for

According to CDC, most people with a Salmonella infection have diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, usually starting 6 hours to 6 days after exposure. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment.

Children younger than 5, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe illness.
