The short version

  • Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., of San Carlos, Chile, recalled frozen berries because they may have E. coli O145.
  • On October 2, 2026, the company added two more lots of Great Value Frozen Organic Triple Berry Blend, three lots of Great Value Frozen Organic Blueberries, and one lot of Trader Joe's Frozen Organic Mixed Berry Blend.
  • This adds to the company's earlier recalls of July 3 and September 3, 2026.
  • An outbreak linked to frozen blueberries from this company made 17 people sick in Florida and Georgia. 6 went to the hospital. No one died.
  • The recalled bags should be off store shelves, but their best-by dates run into 2028. Check your freezer.

What happened in the frozen blueberry outbreak

The FDA and CDC looked into an outbreak of E. coli O145:H28. They linked it to frozen blueberries supplied by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A.

17 people got sick with the outbreak strain. 6 were hospitalized, and no deaths were reported. Of the 13 sick people who were interviewed, 11 (85%) said they ate frozen blueberries.

CDC says the outbreak may have reached more states than the ones with known cases. The true number of sick people was likely much higher, because many people get better without seeing a doctor and are never tested.

One of the Publix samples of GreenWise frozen blueberries tested positive for the outbreak strain. All of the FDA's own finished-product samples in the U.S. were negative.

During an inspection at the company outside the U.S., the FDA learned the company had not given it all the records the FDA asked for earlier. The FDA then added the company to Import Alert 99-35. That means its frozen blueberries can be held at the border without being physically examined.

The October 2 recall is a precaution. It is based on traceback information tied to the frozen blueberries in the first recall, on July 3. The October 2 notice does not report any illnesses linked to the products in it.

What to do if you have recalled frozen berries

  • Don't eat them.
  • Throw them away, or return them to Walmart or Trader Joe's for a full refund.
  • The FDA says the recalled bags should no longer be for sale, but some have best-by dates in 2028. Check your freezer.
  • Questions: Joshua Weiss, 336-899-5612 or Info.foodsafety@comfrut.com, Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM EST.
  • If you ate recalled berries and feel sick, the FDA says to contact your health care provider right away. Symptoms can start a few days after eating the food, or up to nine days later.

E. coli O145 symptoms to watch for

E. coli O145 is a Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). The recall notices say it can cause bad stomach cramps, diarrhea that may be bloody, and vomiting. Most healthy people recover within a week, but some infections can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). That risk is highest for young children, older adults and people with weak immune systems.

CDC says:

  • Symptoms usually start 3 to 4 days after swallowing the germ.
  • Most people get better without treatment in 5 to 7 days.
  • Some people get HUS, a serious kidney problem, and need to be in the hospital.

Call a healthcare provider if you have:

  • Diarrhea or vomiting that lasts more than 2 days
  • Bloody poop or pee
  • A fever above 102°F
  • Signs of dehydration
  • Signs of HUS

Signs of HUS include peeing very little or not at all, losing the pink color in your cheeks and inside your lower eyelids, bruises or tiny red spots you can't explain, blood in your pee, feeling very tired or cranky, and being less alert.
