What happened

The problem was found through a routine sampling program run by the Washington State Department of Agriculture and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which "revealed that the finished products may contain the bacteria." The company says it has stopped distributing the product while FDA and the company look into what caused the problem.

FDA's enforcement report lists September 3, 2026 as the date the recall began. The company announced the recall of 2 lots on September 15, 2026, and FDA posted the notice the same day. FDA classified the recall as Class I on September 24, 2026, and it appeared in FDA's Enforcement Report dated September 30, 2026, where its status is listed as ongoing. On October 1, 2026, the company expanded the recall to all lot codes, and FDA posted the updated notice that day.

FDA describes Class I as "a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."

About Listeria

According to the recall notice, Listeria monocytogenes is "an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems." Healthy people may have short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The notice also says Listeria infection "can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women."
